America vs. Drugs, Crime

The United States is a bureaucracy built by the people for the people. As a nation, we have established hundreds of organizations to deal with different problems and epidemics that may arise within our country. While every agency may have a different mission, they are all geared toward the betterment of American’s quality of life. Three of the biggest national problems our government faces are drugs, crime and immigration. Each one requires a different approach, strategy and the attention of local, state or federal level government.The war on drugs has been an arduous, long fought battle, that doesn’t necessarily have a way to be won. There are many agencies in place to combat drug peddlers, some of these include: the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) ATF (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearm and Explosives) and even the FDA (Federal Drug Administration). Annually, the United State spends over $51,000,000,000 on the war on drugs. Tax reven ue that drug legalization would yield annually, if currently-illegal drugs were taxed at rates comparable to those on alcohol and tobacco: $46.7 billion. D. Baum, author of â€Å"Smoke and Mirrors: War on Drugs and The Politics of the Failure† claims that after â€Å"4 decades of punitive policies, illicit drugs are more easily obtained, drug potencies are greater, and drug barons are richer than ever. † (1997) This war costs more than any other agency, and sometimes costs more than some agencies combined. While local government agencies try to fight with this war as best as they can, they do not have the resources or manpower to keep up with the costs of stopping said crimes.It is unfortunate because the drug war affects local business to the point that inflation, high insurance premiums, and less travelers become a factor and negatively impact the area. While Federal Agencies are better suited to deal with the Drug War, Local Agencies have been more efficient in comb atting general crime. Local Governments tend to understand their demographics more thoroughly, so they can make better use of their funds. Most, if not all, funding for law enforcement comes from grants or tax revenues.Effective crime prevention in high-violence, high-risk neighborhoods begins with the interdependence of local agencies. These agencies need the ability to invest in the neighborhoods to prevent crime rates from rising. The most effective place to start is with children and their education; NCPC (National Crime Prevention Council) is an organization that’s mission it is to educate students and prevent crime. Illegal Immigration is the third problem facing our nation.Like the above-mentioned epidemics, Immigration has federal agencies to prevent this. While there is no concrete solution to this problem, steps are being taken to fix the issue. Whether it is the e-verify program, or a fence to keep illegal aliens out, agencies are constantly trying to come with new solutions. The issue is so complex and difficult, that even the President is threatening to use an executive order to reform the U. S Immigration system. Also because of the complexity of this issue, Federal Agencies such as I. C.E (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) CBP (Customs Border Patrol) Department of Labor or Homeland security offer the best solutions. Local Government usually don’t have the personnel to deal with immigration, as would a Federal Agency such as I. C. E, who have trained agents who specialize in that line of duty, and when faced with danger, know exactly how to carry out orders. All in all, Federal Agencies are usually more inclined to deal with our nation’s problems. It is important to never consolidate the agencies, so that each department can provide the best quality of service.There will always be negative issues that jeopardize our freedom, but how we deal with them is what makes this nation so great. Mississippi Department of corrections Fails Essay

Mississippi Department of corrections Fails to provide proper care and fulfill their constitutional obligations to prisoners in privately owned prison. MDOC considers themselves above the law, and fails to hold up their responsibilities under constitutional laws. They do what they want when they want without concern to anyone. They do not provide adequate and safe meals, nor do they provide proper health care, and in general do not abide by the Mississippi state laws they have committed to punishing others for. They give contracts to privately owned companies from other states, whom honestly could care less about the inmates or the people of Mississippi and are only taking the contracts for the purpose of money gain. MDOC hit with lawsuit over† Inhumane conditions† at prison!!! Chris Davis on May 30th, 2013 filed a lawsuit in Jackson, Ms. Thursday by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Southern poverty Law alleges the Mississippi Department of Corrections has forgotten it’s constitutional obligations to its prisoners at the East Mississippi Correctional facility, a privately run prison under state supervision in Lauderdale County. The suit seeks â€Å"injunctive relief† meaning Mississippi must improve conditions to the satisfaction of the plaintiffs to settle the suit â€Å" East Mississippi Correctional Facility is a destination for individuals who suffer from mental illness†, says Owens. Unfortunately, while they are supposed to get treatment, they get nothing of the like. The conduct that happens there is a shock to the conscience of a civilized society. The most vulnerable continue to be exploited, abused and in some cases tortured. There are also situations where inmates are not provided with proper care or living conditions. (Judy Owens Audio)† some of the conditions are inmates who ask for treatment have been responded to with fire extinguishers and/ or faced with pepper spray, just for asking for help. News Mississippi immediately reached out to the Ms. Dept. of Corrections for their reaction and their comment was; â€Å"we have not been served, we will respond in court,† sa id spokesperson Tara Booth. Owens said the SPLC tried to meet with MDOC but was turned down. Owens also says he knows about budget problems within the department but he believes that does not relieve them of their constitutional obligations to prisoners. â€Å"This is a case about decency and treating people with respect,† said ACLU Att. I personally believe one solution to fix this problem is that Mississippi should manage their own prisons and stop hiring the job out to private out of state management contractors, that could care less about the people in our state . This would also save our state a lot of money to go toward much better things like homeless shelters for our homeless people or to feed our hungry people. What do you think? To what extent is the car club proposal an appropriate extension strategy for First Cars Plc

The main reason why First Cars Plc. should adopt this Car Club proposal is due to the current market position of the firm. The firm’s current market share (in the car rental market) is decreasing due to a leading budget airline offering car rental services to its passengers. The new proposal to target the ‘Car Club’ market would be very beneficial to First Cars as this market is experiencing rapid growth due to the ever rising costs of car ownership (predicted to rise by 20% in the period 2010-14). Early entrance to this market could present an excellent chance to accumulate market share within a market which currently does not have much competition, and with the 2012 Olympic Games just around the corner, this could not have come at a better time. Whereas the current car rental side of the company is losing market share, the Car Club market is predicted to do nothing but grow in size (110% in volume and 300% in value) in the period 2010-14, meaning that this decis ion could be the difference between a profitable & growing business, and a failing one. Another reason why First Cars Plc. should adopt this proposal is because of a grant from the Mayor of London. This  £1.5m grant is for the creation of car club bays within the inner-city area of London (the main area being considered for the scheme), and would potentially reduce the costs of setting up the infrastructure for the Car Club scheme to operate. This would have a great impact on the business as one of the main costs to this scheme would be adequate parking within the area. The fact that the grant is from the Mayor of London will also generate publicity for the company, which is always a good thing. Finally, this is suggested as a pilot scheme. In the unlikely event that this scheme does not prove successful, First Cars Plc. can always fall back on their existing services, although they will be in a large amount of debt. One reason against the plan is the financial implications for the firm. The training budget for the Car Club is  £400,000, over 10 times more that their current spend on training. The budget for marketing is three times the size, and the average staff salary is predicted to rise by around  £10,000. When considering these figures one has to question the feasibility of this scheme. This is a large outlay for a ‘pilot’ scheme and the company has ‘limited financial reserves’. This scheme would also fall within the ‘New Product Development’ area of Ansoff’s matrix, an area with a large amount of risk. The plan also suggests that management should operate in a decentralised manner. This means that instead of a couple of senior managers being responsible for the whole company, control is spread across a larger number of employees. This is a different method to their current centralised management style and means that the senior managers currently in control of the company would lose part their control of the business. As the company is new to this management style, it is quite risky. Poor decisions could be made by inexperienced staff and could lead to disaster. The case study also states that Amy is ‘keen to make a big impact within the business quickly’. Does this mean that she has rushed these plans in order to achieve this? Has she doctored the figures in order to progress the scheme forward and impress her superiors? This could mean that the business is moving into a new market based on data which is not even correct. Overall I do not think that First Cars Plc. should adopt the Car Club Proposal. The idea looked initially promising; an emerging market which is predicted to grow by 300% in value, with little competition at present. These suggestions are all around figures that Amy has put together however. Without the knowledge that Amy may be biased with her predictions, this would appear to be a very good proposal. However, the depth and accuracy of the plan is vital to ensure the success of the business and as this has been brought into question, I would have to say that I do not recommend that First Cars Plc. should progress any further with this proposal until at least this data has been checked and agreed by the directors.
